We’re thrilled to share insights from our recent webinar, “Educational Bridge: Online Proficiency Program in Bariatric Surgery,” held on August 14th. The webinar brought together leading experts in bariatric surgery, including Dr. Bruno Dillemans, Head of Obesity Surgery at AZ Sint-Jan Hospital in Belgium, and Prof. Weihua Yu, Deputy Director at the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University.
Dr. Bruno Dillemans delved into the issue of weight regain after gastric bypass surgery and presented a range of treatment options. He emphasized the importance of understanding the causes of weight regain and called for more high-quality research to determine the best surgical procedures and evaluation standards. During his presentation, Dr. Bruno Dillemans introduced surgical and non-surgical treatment methods, including endoscopic surgery, revisional surgery, and pharmacotherapy. He detailed how to optimize the results of RNY surgery, Specifically, he discussed gastric pouch resizing and the technical aspects of placing an adjustable band. For distalization RYGB surgery, despite the potential advantages in weight loss and metabolic control, Dr. Dillemans expressed caution in promoting distalization RYGB surgery due to the costs of vitamin and mineral supplementation and the lifelong need for regular outpatient visits and nutrition laboratory testing.
Prof. Weihua Yu’s presentation showcased the LSG surgery technique from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital’s Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center. He detailed the minimally invasive approach, using three small incisions or one, which has led to over 2,000 successful surgeries with reduced operation times and minimal blood loss. Prof. Weihua Yu highlighted the importance of staple-line reinforcement (SLR) to avert complications like leakage and twist, ensuring surgical integrity. He also underscored the innovative use of barbed sutures for tissue traction without the need for additional ports, and the strategic application of surgical gauze friction to enhance surgical field exposure, both of which contribute to the efficiency and safety of the LSG procedure. The center’s low complication rate of 0.2% reflects its commitment to excellence and innovation in patient care.
The engaging presentations by Dr. Bruno Dillemans and Prof. Weihua Yu sparked lively discussions among online participants, covering topics such as bariatric surgery indications, surgical techniques, and postoperative management. The event served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration in the field of obesity surgery.
We are deeply thankful to @Dr. Bruno Dillemans and @Prof. YU Weihua for their thought-provoking presentations and significant contributions. A special mention of appreciation goes to our partners DMB Medical, @Adriaan Meuleman, and our moderator, @Patricia Tong, for their steadfast support and dedication.
